sharing the bigger picture of our adoption story
My name is Alison.
As a child, I begged my mother to adopt a baby and pledged my help to take care of it. She wasn’t interested, but the desire remained in my heart.
As a teenager, I began to experience symptoms that planted the fear in my heart that I would never be able to have children. I poured my heart out to God through prayer, over pages and pages of journal entries and poetry that His will would be done in my life.
At this same time I began working with children from “disadvantaged circumstances” in a non-profit organization that became my ministry and my career for the next nine years. It was here, in the midst of loving children who did not belong to me, that I met Brad. We shared this passion for doing all we could to meet the needs of children and families in our community.
It was in 2000 that I truly accepted that I might not have biological children. Under a starry sky in an open field in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee I claimed my life verse: “For God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
Less than two years later, Brad and I were married, and while we weren’t hoping for children right away, we also weren’t preventing it from happening. What was stirring in my heart for over a decade finally emerged on our fourth wedding anniversary, as we mailed in our pre-application to begin the adoption process.
Our adoption story was written long ago, not by us but by our Creator. His plan to adopt us into His family through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ planted seeds in our hearts that came to life in June 2007 when we welcomed Norah into our family through a domestic adoption. Though the little details of this blog may be about our adoption story, we hope our thoughts and images might inspire you to look into the bigger picture of God’s plan for your life - to adopt you into His family as one of His children.
